The purpose of the THRIVE program...

is to provide support for the children exposed to domestic violence that will promote healing and stability enabling them to recognize and engage in healthy, loving relationships.

As part of Family Haven's goal to end the cycle of violence, it must address the impact of domestic violence on the children, as well as, the impact on the parent/child relationship. To this end, Family Haven introduced the THRIVE program which focuses on building resilience in children who witness who witness domestic violence, and strengthening the parent/child relationship.

According to the Child Information Gateway, (2012) children who witness domestic violence or sexual assault are at high risk for maladaptive or unhelpful beliefs related to the abusive events, including feelings of guilt and powerlessness, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms. These beliefs can negatively impact the child's behavior, school performance, and self-perception. This can ultimately lead to an adult who has difficulty establishing a health self-identity, and healthy partner/family relationships. Also, this presents a high risk for continuing the cycle of abuse. Therefore, it's imperative that we have a program such as THRIVE to assist children with the long-term effects of domestic violence.

Funds designed for the THRIVE program will enable us to accomplish the following:

  • Children under the age of 14 will have a safe environment (shelter and outreach location) to communicate and manage the trauma they have experienced.
  • Victims of domestic violence will actively engage in ways to nurture their children, understand their children's feelings and behaviors, and develop strategies for positive parenting.
  • Parents and children who leave the shelter will be given opportunities to connect with support agencies and organizations to promote long-term healthy relationships.
  • Parents and children who participated in the program and who have left the shelter will have access to our local offsite counseling support group for up to one year to support long-term healthy relationships.

To accomplish the stated goals, Family Haven has an onsite Licensed Professional Counselor and Children's Case Manager who provides the following:

  • Structured and unstructured children's group/individual trauma-focused therapy
  • Structured and unstructured children's group for family violence education
  • Structured parenting groups
  • Parent/child monitored activities
  • Community referral and follow-up services
  • Outcome tracking and evaluation
